14 OCTOBER 2026 | Chișinău City Day Every city has a story. A story written over time through its streets, through buildings that have stood for generations, through parks where we find peace and quiet, and, above all, through the people who bring it to life. For each of us, Chișinău means something different. It may be the street where we spent our childhood, the neighbourhood where we grew up, the park where we walk with our loved ones, or the place where we have built our future. On City Day, we celebrate all these connections that bring us together and transform Chișinău from an urban space into a place we call home. Happy City Day, Chișinău!

Where is it safe to build? How can we protect the river that flows through our city? And how can we prepare together for increasingly hot summers? These are the main topics addressed by the Environmental Protection, Natural and Anthropogenic Hazards Study, currently open for public consultation as part of Public Consultation CP-04 within the update process of the General Urban Plan of the Municipality of Chișinău 2040. Until 4 November 2026, each of us has the opportunity to make our voice heard and influence the decisions that will shape the future of Chișinău.

When we think about the city we live in, the first images that come to mind are not necessarily its main boulevards or administrative buildings, but rather the familiar route we take home every evening. We think of the leafy canopies of trees that protect our courtyards from the summer heat, the lakeside where we clear our minds after a busy day, or the hidden paths where children explore the world around them. This urban nature, deeply intertwined with everyday life, is the true green lung of our communities. It is not merely a decorative element, but the foundation of our health, peace of mind, and everyday well-being.

Every city has places that define it. Buildings, streets, parks, squares, public spaces, and landscapes that, beyond their practical functions, preserve memories, reflect history, and contribute to the city's identity. For some, Chișinău means the historic streets and buildings of the city centre. For others, it is the parks where they spent their childhood, the pathways they walk every day, or the places that have become part of community life. But how can we ensure that the city's development does not come at the cost of losing the elements that make it recognisable?

When we talk about a city’s heritage, we often think first of monuments or well-known historic buildings. However, urban heritage encompasses much more than that. It may include buildings, architectural ensembles, streets, neighbourhoods, public spaces, urban structures, and other elements that contribute to the city’s identity and collective memory. In Chișinău, these elements reflect different stages in the city’s evolution. Some are easily recognised and appreciated, while others are so naturally integrated into the everyday urban landscape that their value may go unnoticed.
